Educational Apps

How do you envision using Apps in the future? Do you think they will become a standard in education? How is technology changing the classroom?

  1. Now that I am aware of the educational apps that Google Chrome has to offer, I will definitely utilize some of them in my English classes. For the past year, I have been creating my own worksheets and quizzes on basic grammar to help the students improve their writing skills; however, the students could not grasp certain concepts, such as active vs passive voice or the pronoun antecedent agreement. I just found an excellent app that has a ton of grammar exercises. It offers brief quizzes, fun games, and even downloadable worksheets for teachers and students. I think this app will be beneficial to all my English classes next year, and I can't wait to use it!

Since most schools are receiving grants for student laptops or Ipads, I believe that apps will become a part of the curriculum. I attended a high school that had an e1:1 learning initiative, and because every student had a laptop, the teachers were required to utilize the laptops during class at least once a week. There were specific applications available for each subject area, and the teachers were all trained on how to use them and how to incorporate them into the lessons.

Technology is definitely useful in today's classroom. I think that it enhances the learning process, and it allows for more active learning. Rather than lecturing to students, teachers now engage them in the lesson, and this certainly helps the students process and retain the information.

  2. As the face of the future is about technology I believe that Apps will be used to enhance any lesson or be used as an extension activity . There are valuable Apps in all subjects and grade levels that would offer enrichment to all learning styles. From Biodigital Human for health (6-8) to Typing Club for computers (K-2) Apps present information in the form students are now most accustomed .

With the future of assessments being presented digitally, school wide and nationally, I think apps will defiantly become a standard in education. The student's achievement will be based, not just on knowledge, but also their ability to keyboard, use programs, and communicate through social media settings. I think Apps that meet these objectives will be implemented more into the classroom.

Technology today is making the classroom interchangeable. Programs like Haiku, EdMoto, and Nimbus allow the classroom to travel with the student. These provide the students, teacher, and parents with current lessons, assignments, calendars, and updates. They also provide an open line of communication between teacher/student, student/student, and teacher/parent.

  3. After searching through the chrome apps and extensions I found that there is not much there that can be used in music education today. And the few that I did find are very lacking and very limited. I think that Apps can be a good way to enhance learning and get students more involved but right now, for the field of music ed, they are not ready. Technology in the classroom is an amazing thing. Even just the little things like parents being able to check grades online now has had a huge impact on the way classrooms run. Students arent able to hide their grades anymore which makes them work a little harder. I think that technology will always have a place in the classroom and will help the classroom keep growing.

  4. After looking at the different apps that chrome had I really believe that the idea of having specific apps towards single topics really makes a topic of study easy to focus on. I am a fan that apps help control where students look to research their information. Instead of gathering information from various websites, apps can lead students to content specific information.

I think that technology in the classroom is and will always evolve. One area which I really think technology helps students is the flipped classroom. Having students "pace" themselves and have access to teacher content when they are outside of the classroom gives them a huge advantage in learning new content.

  5. I believe as time continues to pass Technology will only continue to become more of a part of education. As it is today it plays a huge role in what most classrooms do. Almost all fields of study use technology is some way. As more time passes the current students will be more Apt to handle these technology challenges since they have grown up with it in their lives.

As for my classroom i would like to see more apps that are geared towards elementary music education. The one app i was able to find in regards to note reading was more advanced then a elementary student could handle. I do like the note card apps and think it would be a fun way to get students to learn the musical terms we go over through out the year. It would be a great way to monitor how much they are actually remembering through out the year.

  6. I believe that Apps is a logical and simple way to enhance any classroom. Nowadays, school aged people are so used to using the newest technology, so I think it would be easy to introduce these Apps for multiple kinds of lessons, especially for math or science. I envision using Apps in most of my teaching in the future for various areas of study because I think my students will be quick learners to it and it will make the learning that much more engaging!

I think Apps will definitely become a standard in education. With all the advances in technology, Apps is just one more feature that will make learning easier and more fun for the students!

Technology is greatly changing the classroom. When I was a kid, we had one computer class a week and that was it! We weren't able to check out laptops or use video cameras to tape and edit skits. Technology has come a long way and definitely for the better! Just from some of my own experiences as a classroom teacher, I used the green screen to tape my students as they came through Ellis Island with their bundles strapped to their backs. They got to choose their background image from the country they were coming from to use the green screen feature. This is just one example of how I've used technology in my classroom, but there are endless possibilities of what you can do. I think with these Google Chrome Educational Apps, our students of today are at a great advantage for what they can accomplish.

  7. I do believe that learning games, research, making bibliographies, dictionaries, textbooks and applications for drawing, word processing, or whatever will all be on the internet in the future. Google Chrome Apps is a good start to that future. I was a little disappointed in the lack of quality and depth of the Chrome Apps. There were misspelled words and broken links in more than a few of the apps I was looking at. The "top 10" lists had better fare. I envision a one2one or BYOD program where student learning takes place using Apps and/or the internet in some way. In my position, I encourage teachers to use technology. I have already begun searching out promising Apps. I am very impressed with apps like cK-12, offering free online instruction and flex books (definitely a way of the future), a sort of build-your-own textbook. I see apps like this as a great resource to the Flipped Classroom. Along with cK-12, EasyBib, Dictionary, and other content-rich apps are the kind that I will bring together for my teachers. We have a set of Chromebooks, and I am already thinking about what apps I would like to have on them.

  8. A lot of the Apps I found for Mathematics were geared towards younger grades (Learn your Math facts type of things) but a few of the Graphing Calculator apps have some appeal. I like that they can have real-time effects when they manipulate an equation and see what their choices are doing. A very experimental approach. I'm all for the use of technology in the classroom as long as it is used properly. I fear in the not too distant future classrooms will just be study halls with every kid on a device and not taking advantage of the expert in the room. I would prefer it to be an additional supplement than the primary learning method, but that's me.

  9. The more technology I learn about the more my classroom changes. There are many apps that can be beneficial in the classroom especially math apps.

I will be implementing all the things I've learned in this course in my classroom.

  10. After exploring some of the apps that Chrome has to offer, I am definitely intrigued. I would like to think that over time, apps will become more accessible to teachers/students/schools (read: cheap/free). I found that it was a bit tricky to use some of these apps because they do require you to pay for certain features. I think that eventually these types of things will be dealt with and handled so that apps will be easier to use in the classroom. I know that the first grader I babysit brought home the link to the behavior management app site, and her parents are now able to follow along with her behavior everyday. This is a great step for parent-teacher communication. I think that technology is only going to become more prevalent in the classroom, especially considering how much students enjoy working with it. If we can gear lessons toward student enjoyment, they are much more likely to retain the information we are teaching them.

  11. Prior to working on this lesson, I had never ventured onto Google Chrome. After looking through the apps, I have begun envisioning how I could use these apps in the future. I see using these apps more in the future as a supplemental tool both in the classroom, for the kids to use during computer time, and as a helpful resource for parents. Many times, I have parents who come to ask for ways they can help their child at home with things their child is struggling with, and now I hope to be able to refer them to these apps. Also, with the national core, I understand the tests will be taken on the computer; something I don't think students are used to, and may not perform well in the first few years. Therefore, I think it would be beneficial to have students use the typing apps to help prepare them for the online tests.

I'm not sure if using apps will be a standard in education, but I do feel that more concentration will go towards implementing technology in education.

Education is changing the classroom, only as much as the teacher allows it to change. I feel, if a teacher is resistant to incorporating more technology, there will be minimal amounts used in the classroom. However, if the teacher is looking for new ways to incorporate technology, then it will be utilized often in the classroom.

Overall, I think technology is something that will continue to be implemented more and more into each classroom.

  12. Many of the apps that are available through google chrome are already being used in my classroom on the ipads. As a Strategies Intervention teacher, not only do I teach reading and math skills, but one of my responsibilities includes supporting other the other subjects as well. Some of the apps that I am more interested in exploring further have to do with organization. From MySchoolNotebook to myHomework to Quizlet, these apps would most definitely benefit my students with organizing and taking notes, keeping track of homework and long term assignments, as well as preparing for tests and quizzes.

  13. I envision Apps being used a tool for learning, organizing, resources, and a progress trackers for both the teacher and students.

I do think technology should become standard in the classroom, this will produces stronger lessons, but there’s a sharp disconnect between the way students are taught in school and the way the outside world approaches socialization, meaning-making, and accomplishment. By bring this outside would to the classroom using different means of technology this will allow the disconnection to become connected.
Technology can have a reciprocal relationship with teaching. The emergence of new technologies pushes educators to understanding and leveraging these technologies for classroom use; at the same time, the on-the-ground implementation of these technologies in the classroom can (and does) directly impact how these technologies continue to take shape.

  14. How do you envision using Apps in the future? Do you think they will become a standard in education? How is technology changing the classroom?

I envision apps being apart of the curriculum for all courses. As more and more students become technology savvy, and more and more teacher become comfortable using them.

As more teachers get used to them, it will become second nature to them to use and incorporate into their day to day lessons.

Technology is changing rapidly, I went to school learning how to use AutoCAD, which is still taught, only because some schools and other engineering firms have not evolved into using more advanced software. Today, use Inventor in my classroom, which has so much more to offer. Blueprints, animation, 3D, Assemblies, etc.

  15. I was surprised by how many useful apps there are for chrome. They have everything from graphing calculators, to powerful geometry software, to review games and aids. I plan on recommending many of these to my students and trying to incorporate several into my teaching, as well. I think apps like this could very well become a standard in education. They are simple, cheap, and effective. Technology is making it easier for teachers to provide their students with more varied instruction without taking up valuable classroom time.

  16. Technology has made a huge impact on the way we teach in the classroom, as we have all seen over the past few years, especially of late. Whether we choose to use this technology to our advantage or teach in a traditional style, all depends on the diversity of the teacher and the willingness to change old habits. Although I think most of us can agree that there is a lot to be said for adding technology into the classroom, one can also get hung up on the technology itself and lose sight of the content that needs to be learned. I am not so sure that using apps in the classroom will ever be "standard practice" however I can definitely see the usefulness in many applications. As stated earlier, technology in the classroom is not necessarily made for every teacher, but there are many teachers that will benefit from the availability of different apps. I consider myself to be a bit of a experimentalist in the classroom and can definitely see myself using some of the apps in the classroom....or at least to try them out anyhow. Great teachers learn what works in their teaching quickly and always evolve. If it doesn't work, don't use it, however don't be afraid to try new things.

  18. I am amazed at all of the apps on Google Chrome and am very excited to use some of the science apps in my classroom next year. Just by browsing, there are many useful programs that I could use to supplement my teaching. I believe that if technology is used in the appropriate way and correctly, it can help students tremendously. They are surrounded by technology and its is their "language." Technology for teachers has to go beyond power points, video clips, and smart boards, because that is literally "old news" for our students today. Browsing through all of the different technological tools and apps, I am excited to put some new ideas into my lessons next year.
